Sebab kota inilah ditetapkan oleh Raja Daud sebagai ibukota negaranya. Sebab di kota inilah Raja Salomo membangun Bait Suci, kediaman Allah. Kota Yerusalem amat bernilai pula bagi umat Kristen. Sebab disinilah Yesus pernah mengajar, disengsarakan, wafat di salib dan bangkit, sambil menggenapkan karya penebussan dunia. 

Untuk umat Islam, Jerusalem adalah tempat naiknya (miraj) Nabi Muhammad ke surga. Inilah kota tersuci ketiga bagi umat Islam sesudah Mekkah dan Medinah. Selain itu Jerusalem menjadi tempat inspirasi bagi banyak nabi, seniman, penyair dan ilmuwan. 

Kini Jerusalem menjadi pusat budaya, tempat banyak museum, galeri seni, teater dan universitas. Jerusalem masa kini adalah kota yang amat moderen. Namanya yang indah searti dengan Kota Damai.

Kota ini menjadi tempat wisata yang sangat ramai dikunjungi oleh turis mancanegara dari berbagai budaya, suku dan agama.
